🗞️ Scandal this week as Colombia’s Attorney General opened an investigation into the purchase and illegal use of spyware by the previous government.
President Gustavo Petro claims the programme may have been used to spy on opposition politicians. There are even concerns that Colombian security forces are still using the software.
Israeli surveillance software Pegasus was purchased for 11 million dollars - in cash - by the government of Iván Duque in 2021. Pegasus is the world’s most advanced mobile phone spying technology, including access to camera, microphone, location, and display.
The Pegasus scandal has been rolling on for years, with the software found on the devices of 50,000 people worldwide, including numerous journalists, human rights defenders, and political opposition figures.
